There are 52 weeks in a year. Which means that during most years there will be 52 Saturdays. However, 2016 isn't most years. 2016 is a special year. That's because during both 2016 we will get an extra Saturday.
Explanation: This happens because each year has 365 days or 366 days when it is a leap year. 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day and 366 days is 52 weeks and 2 days (52 x 7 = 364). Therefore if a normal 365 day year starts on a Saturday or when a 336 day leap year starts on a Friday (like in 2016) thanks to that additional day or two days tagged onto the end of the 52 weeks, we get an extra Saturday. Therefore, in 2016 we will have 53 Saturdays!
How great is that?! One extra Saturday to stay in bed, hit the town, go shopping, go to the cinema, visit a vintage market, flower market, food market, a park, spend all day in the pub, watch the football, go for a long ass cycle or all the other wonderful and not so wonder things that you get up to on a Saturday.
Unfortunately it won't make much difference to me as I work on Saturdays and so it will simply mean yet another Saturday that I work 10am - 4pm (with no break, poor me haha) and envy those who get to have a lie in on Saturdays.
Ps. due to this "quirk" in our calendar, we will have the joy of 53 Monday mornings in 2018!
