I was doing well, my training was going well, I was swimming 4 or 5 times a week and feeling super motivated... and then Christmas happened.

Which meanr 10 days between the 22d December and the 1st of January where I didn't swim  - longer than I had planned - before I swam again for the first time on New Years Day. My New Years swim was ok. Having 10 days off hadn't appeared to affect me too much. But for one reason or another - including feeling a little down (very probably) due to a seriously lack of sunlight - I've found it really hard to get back to regular swimming. It's now the 12th of the month and if I swim tonight - which I am planning on doing so - it will only be for the 3rd or maybe 4th time this year. Which really isn't good enough!

I currently haven't swam for 5 days! The main reason for that being this stupid cough. I've been ill for over a week now and I'm really starting to see my arse with it. It started off with a sore throat, progressed to full on flu symptoms - which lasted for just a day or two - and since that I've been left with this annoying cough (which has been affecting my sleep and making me feel tired all the time).

And the thing is, I'm not used to getting ill. I normally get some sort of flu type illness once a winter - hopefully this is it for this year - which makes me bed bound for a couple of days and then that's it until next year. But this year has been a bit different. It was never bad enough to keep me in bed - although I did stay in bed watching cartoons and feeling sorry for myself anyway haha - but has hung around for a lot longer.

So I went to the shop the other day to get some cough medicine - and baulked at the £4 price tag - and found that cough medicines appear to be separated into three categories. Medicines for: tickly, chesty and mucus(y) coughs. Which is all well and good, except what do you do when you have the kind of cough that I have? A cough that is all of the above! An annoying dry, itchy throat, which sounds like a seal lion's bark when I cough and has me constantly bringing up phlegm (sorry for that lovely imagine).

I guess the answer to a 3 in 1 cough is a 3 in 1 cough medicine? Like Wash & Go but for coughs! Any suggestions?

So in an effort not to make myself feel even worse - read that as: in an effort to find any excuse not to swim - I haven't swam in almost a week. But that's not ok because I made a pact with myself that no matter the problem I would just swim through it. So tonight I must go and swim because I need to get back to swimming 4 times a week if I'm going to make this swim happen. & most importnatly I have to remember... (click here)
